The 2nd International Prisoner Health Conference

Following on from the success of the inaugural event in Estonia last year, we are pleased to announce that the 2nd International Prisoner Health Conference will take place on the 24th and 25th September 2007. The venue for this year's conference is Varna on the Black Sea Coast in Bulgaria and we are honoured to have the support and co-operation of the Municipality of Varna.

This two-day international conference will address the key health problems experienced by prisoners and examine best practice in implementing health services for this group. Key areas to be addressed by keynote speakers, workshops and participant presentations will include:

  • Sex in prison and Sexual health in prison
  • Provision of health care in police detention
  • Provision of health care in other detention settings
  • Nurses in prison: standards, guidelines and good practice
  • Preventative health care
  • Management of health care conditions in the prison environment (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, mental health)
  • Aftercare of prisoners
  • Forensic medicine
  • Holistic care (psycho, social, through-care)
  • Drug treatment - abstinence and maintenance approaches
  • Harm reduction
  • Dual diagnosis
  • Self harm and suicide
  • Improving prison health conditions:
    • the provision of harm reduction measures
    • improved environmental health (i.e. decreasing overcrowding, improved conditions/sanitation, etc.)
    • improving the working environment for prison staff
  • Environmental health: architecture (light, air, ventilation, space etc)
  • Alternatives to prison
  • Human rights and the obligations of states to provide proper standards of health care.
